2019 aCATemy Awards -Breakthrough Performance
Breakthrough Performance Award Nominees
Samantha Armas, Women's Tennis
"Coming off last year being in and out of the lineup, Sam has had a tremendous year securing her spot in both singles and doubles. She has the second best record on the team with a 13-4 singles record and a 10-8 doubles record. Sam has been the rock for us this entire year and has come through for the team in many occasions. Against App. State she had match points against her, served an ace to stay in the match and then went on to clinch the match for us to gain a 4-3 win as a team. Against UNCA she clinched the doubles for us with a backhand poach winner on match point which took huge guts! She was 1 of only 2 players to win her singles matches against Winthrop, College of Charleston, and ECU all of who are nationally ranked. Against a strong A-10 Richmond team, with the team score at 3-3 and the last match on, down 2 match points Sam went all out and hit 2 winners in 2 consecutive points to stay in the match and then won the third set tiebreak to clinch the match for us as a team with a 4-3 decision."
