Davidson Sports Medicine

The Davidson College Sports Medicine facilities are among the best in the region. Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Beth Hayford (Wingate '93) oversees Davidson's six other full-time, certified and licensed athletic trainers to cover the school's 21 intercollegiate sports.

Dr. Don D'Alessandro of OrthoCarolina's Sports Medicine Center in Charlotte has served as Davidson's team orthopaedic physician since 2001. He is a leading sports medicine physician specializing in athletic injuries, arthroscopic and reconstructive knee surgery and shoulder and elbow surgery. He served as the first team physician for the Carolina Panthers and currently is team physician for MLL Charlotte Hounds, Stewart-Haas Racing, Queens University as well as local public and private high schools and is assistant team physician for Hendrick Motorsports.

Academically, Dr. D'Alessandro is Chief of Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery, training orthopaedic residents at Carolinas Medical Center and is Faculty for OrthoCarolina Sports Medicine Center's Sports Medicine Fellowship.

Dr. Karl 'Skip' Barkley of University Family Physicians serves as the college's team general practitioner. Barkley, a 1979 graduate of Davidson, has served as a team physician for the Wildcats for more than a decade. He has also taken part in medical mission trips to Belarus, Nicaragua and Mexico.
