Certain rules and regulations apply to student athletes during the summer regarding competing and practicing. Ignoring these regulations may cause scholar-athletes to lose part or all remaining eligibility status. These regulations also include participation with teams while studying abroad. Before participating in any sport related outside, summer activity, please consult your coach or the Compliance Director. The following rules apply:
Summer Practice
Sports other than Football and Basketball:
During a vacation period or summer workout session, a coach may participate in individual-workout sessions with scholar-athletes from the coach's team, provided the request for such assistance is initiated by the scholar-athlete.
Basketball
During summer and outside the playing season, a scholar-athlete is permitted to participate in required weight training, conditioning, and skill-related instruction. However, a scholar-athletes participation in such activities shall be limited to a maximum of 8 hours a week with not more than 4 hours a week spent on skill-related workouts.
All Sports
- Practice that is organized or financially supported by a member institution shall be prohibited during the summer months.
- Play in any type of all-star contest is prohibited.
- No student-athlete shall except any form of payment for summer play or practice.
- The number of student-athletes who may participate on the same summer league team is as follows:
- Baseball – 4 scholar-athletes from the same Division I institution
- Soccer – 6 scholar-athletes from the same Division I institution
- Lacrosse – 5 scholar-athletes from the same Division I institution.
- No student-athlete shall except any form of payment for summer play or practice.
Basketball
- Any league in which a Division I student-athlete participates, must be approved by the management council. The league may run between the days of June 15 and August 31.
- Written permission must be received from the Director of Athletics.
- All division I student-athletes must limit his/her competition to one team in one league and there shall be no more that one player with remaining eligibility playing on the same league team.
- League play shall be within 100 air miles of the city limits of the student-athletes home city. If no local leagues exist, the student-athlete may play in the league closest to his/her home city.
