Financial Aid
- You may have been awarded a grant-in-aid (frequently called a "scholarship") because of your athletics ability. That aid may range from a small stipend to a full grant covering tuition, board, room, and any other required fees.
- It is important to remember that all athletic grants made by Davidson College are for one year only. The athletic grant may be renewed from year to year. Notification of renewal or non-renewal must be made in writing before July 1 of each year. The notification shall come from the Financial Aid Office.
- Athletic grants cannot be canceled or reduced during the academic year unless you render yourself ineligible for competition or are found guilty of serious misconduct or voluntarily withdraw (quit) from the sport. Further, athletic grants may not be increased during the year.
Employment
Earnings from a scholar-athlete's on- or off-campus employment that occurs at any time, is exempt and is not counted in determining the scholar-athlete's financial aid limitations, provided:
- The scholar-athlete's compensation does not include any remuneration for the value or utility that the scholar-athlete may have for the employer because of the publicity, reputation, fame or personal following he or she has obtained because of athletics ability;
- The scholar-athlete is to be compensated only for work actually performed; and
- The scholar-athlete is to be compensated at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services.
A scholar-athlete may receive compensation for teaching or coaching sports skills or techniques in his or her sport on a fee-for-lesson basis. However, the following restrictions do apply to fee-for-lesson situations:
- The institutions facilities may NOT be used;
- Playing lessons are NOT permitted;
- The lesson recipient or family member and not another individual or entity, must pay compensation for such lessons;
- The scholar-athlete CANNOT use his or her name, picture or appearance to promote or advertise the availability of fee-for-lesson sessions; and
- Instruction to each individual is comparable to the instruction that would be provided during a private lesson when the instruction involves more than one individual at a time.
Camps and Clinics:
A scholar-athlete may be employed by his or her institution, by another institution, or by a private organization to work in a camp or clinic as a counselor. However, the following requirements must be met:
- The scholar-athlete must perform duties that are of general supervisory character in addition to any coaching or officiating assignments,;
- Compensation provided to the scholar-athlete shall be commensurate with the going rate for camp and clinic counselors of like teaching ability and camp or clinic experience, and may not be paid on the basis of value that the scholar-athlete may have for the employer because of the athletics reputation or fame the scholar-athlete has achieved; and
- A scholar-athlete who only lectures or demonstrates at a camp or clinic may not receive compensation for his or her appearance at the camp or clinic.
Self-Employment:
A scholar-athlete may establish his or her own business, provided the scholar-athlete's name, photograph, appearance or athletics reputation are not used to promote the business.
Extra Benefit – An extra benefit is any special gift or arrangement provided by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interest to a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend that is not available to the general student body of the institution.
You share the responsibility of making sure that you are not the recipient of any of these benefits.
When in doubt about accepting any benefit, you should consult your coach or the Compliance Director.
