Davidson Academic Requirements
The academic requirements for Davidson College students can be found in the document Academic Regulations for 2019-2020 issued by the Registrar’s Office.
NCAA Requirements
Listed below are some of the major academic requirements of the NCAA. It is important for scholar-athletes to be aware of these so as not to jeopardize their eligibility.
- The NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse must certify all scholar-athletes entering college for the first time.
- A scholar-athlete must be enrolled full time each semester to be eligible for practice and competition. A scholar-athlete will be declared ineligible if he/she drops below full time. (3 courses at Davidson is considered full time)
- A scholar-athlete must pass a minimum of 24 hours (6 courses) of degree credit each academic year. The academic year includes the fall, spring, and summer semesters. A scholar-athlete must earn 18 hours (5 courses = 20 hours) during the fall and spring semesters. Only 6 satisfactory progress hours may be earned during summer school each academic year.
- A scholar-athlete must declare a major that leads toward a specific baccalaureate degree by the beginning of the third year of enrollment and there after shall make satisfactory progress toward that specific degree.
- Scholar-athletes first entering college on or after August 1, must complete 25 percent of their degree requirements by the beginning of their third year, 50 percent of their degree requirements by the beginning of their fourth year, and 75 percent of their degree requirements by the beginning of their fifth year of college enrollment.
- Scholar-athletes may not miss class to attend practice.
Academic Assistance
Academic Assistance is available through The Dean of Students’ Office. Students desiring help should notify the Dean of Students Office and consult the list of tutors to retrieve names of tutors. A student desiring help is then responsible for contacting a tutor and arranging a time to get together.
Academic Honors
The Atlantic 10 Conference and the NCAA annually recognize those scholar-athletes whose academic performance has been outstanding. The conference selects an Academic Honor Roll team, which is based on the previous year’s academic performance. These fellowships can provide substantial financial assistance for graduate study.
Scheduling
Scholar-athletes should note that they may not miss more than 3 MWF classes or 2 TTh classes per semester to participate in athletic contests. This is a college policy and should be adhered to unless your Professor provides you with a different attendance policy or the Atlantic 10 Conference arranges a different athletic competition schedule for your team.
Scholar-athletes must be aware of the number of absences in a particular class to avoid problems. Consult with your professor before the absence, in order to make arrangements to make up any missed work.
