
Wildcats Fall in Five Sets at Winthrop to Begin Season

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Davidson volleyball team battled all the way, but fell to Winthrop in five sets on Friday night.
The Wildcats won the first set 25-22 and posted a sizzling .365 hitting percentage. Mia Compas, Meile Songaila, and Ariyana Johnson combined for 11 kills in the opening set. Compas returned to action in a big way for the first time in a regular season match since Nov. 17, 2023.
Winthrop bounced back and grabbed the second set 25-23. Davidson responded with a strong third set and won 25-20. Down 19-18, the Wildcats won seven of the final eight points and claimed a 2-1 advantage into the fourth set.
The Eagles took the third set 25-19 and then played a strong fifth set. Winthrop didn't have a single attack error in the final frame and posted a .500 hitting percentage.
Ariyana Johnson made a significant impact in her debut for the Wildcats. The freshman recorded a team-high 15 kills and had a .242 hitting percentage.
Meile Songaila, Mia Compas, and Elena Garcia-Guerrios also registered at least 10 kills on the night. Compas only had three attack errors and a .450 hitting percentage. Songaila logged a double double with 14 kills and 14 digs.
