SALEM, Va. – In addition to Cody Kirk winning the freshman / sophomore title at 184 pounds, three others placed in their respective weight classes for the Davidson wrestling team at the Southeast Open Sunday inside the Cregger Center.
After starting the annual event with a 4-2 win in his first collegiate match, Kirk defeated Virginia Tech's Gunnar Garelli in the quarterfinals, 9-5. The freshman would later pin Dylan Shelton (F&M) to punch his ticket to the finals, where he would hold off Brock Sullivan (NWR), 4-2, to finish a perfect 4-0 on the day.
Competing at 197 pounds in the freshman / sophomore division, Davidson's Dylan Smith recorded wins over Cannen Harlow (VATP), Hunter Moore (NWR) and Brody Switzer (Coker) before falling in the finals to Kade Rule (Chattanooga) to take runner-up.
Tanner Peake started his senior campaign in impressive fashion with a fourth-place finish at 165 pounds in the open division. Following a 2-1 triumph over West Virginia's Sasha Gavronsky, Peake upset No. 21 Mac Church of Virginia Tech with a fall at the 2:53 mark.
