WILMINGTON, Del. – Davidson's 2022-23 season came to an end in the Atlantic 10 Championship's second round on Thursday night, as the 'Cats fell 64-53 to No. 6 Saint Joseph's inside the CHASE Fieldhouse.
The Wildcats entered the tournament as the 11-seed, and advanced to the second round after defeating St. Bonaventure 70-51 on Wednesday. The win against the Bonnies marked the fifth consecutive season in which the women's basketball program won its opening-round matchup at the A-10 tournament.
The Hawks shot 53 percent from the floor and held the Wildcats to 40 percent shooting after jumping out to a 9-0 lead from the opening tip, and held the 'Cats without a made field goal for nearly the first eight minutes of the game.
After Suzi-Rose Deegan and Maddie Plank ended the drought, Issy Morgan closed out the first quarter with a driving layup to put the Wildcats within eight, 13-5, after 10 minutes of play.
Davidson reversed roles with Saint Joe's in the second, as Plank and Morgan led the Wildcats on a 7-0 run to tie things up at 13-all. From there, Elle Sutphin drained her first three of the day, followed by a mid-range jumper, to give Davidson its first and largest lead of the day at 20-15. The Hawks got the last word in from there, taking one final 6-0 run into the locker room to lead 24-22 at the break.
Sallie Schutz converted a defensive stop into a jumper at the start of the second half to knot the game at 24-all, but Saint Joe's responded with eight straight and pulled ahead 32-24. The Wildcats crawled back within three of the Hawks on two more occasions, thanks to a 3-pointer from Mallorie Haines and a jumper from Sutphin, but Saint Joe's pulled together an 11-0 run to lead 47-33 at the end of the third.
The Hawks stretched their lead to as many as 20, 58-38, before time expired and ultimately secured the second round victory.
Sutphin ended the day with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Morgan scored nine and dished six assists.
Davidson concludes the 2022-23 season at 14-16 overall and 6-8 in Atlantic 10 play.
