Mike & Nancy Kota Share Why They Support Davidson Athletics

"We've become increasingly cynical about what we see as the growing excesses of big time college football and basketball programs, and we are grateful that Davidson follows a different path and has coaches, administrators and athletes who accept/embrace that path," said the pair. "It is evident to us that Davidson athletes are committed students, and we marvel at how hard Davidson athletes train (we weren't on the track or lifting at 7 a.m. during the off-season when we were college students, that's for sure); at how well Davidson athletes seem to balance academics and athletics; and at how successfully Davidson teams compete against much larger schools with different academic profiles and financial resources."
Mike and Nancy are also grateful for the daily intimacy of Davidson athletics—saying hello to a coach at the post office; greeting a player at the Pickled Peach on Main Street; an impromptu conversation with a coach they encounter on the greenway or the cross-country trails; post-game conversations with coaches and players' parents at the Brickhouse just across from campus.
"We appreciate that intimacy and try not to take it for granted," they said.
Because of this gratitude, the couple donates to the Davidson Athletic Fund, in addition to their support of The Davidson Trust and The Parent Fund for Davidson.
"We're just glad that we are able to help out a little bit," they said. "We make donations to the men's basketball program specifically, but we've also made donations to be used by Athletic Director Chris Clunie '06 at his discretion, since he is in the best position to know where our donation can best be put to use."
