Q&A with Women's Field Hockey Nellie Turnage '21
4/28/2021 2:52:00 PM | Field Hockey, DAF
I was attracted to Davidson because I loved the small, tight-knit community and the people. Everyone says that, but it's true – at Davidson, the people make the place what it is. I also love the warm weather and being near a lake and a city!
What made you choose Davidson over other opportunities?
The girls on the field hockey team were super welcoming and friendly to me during all my visits. And I knew I wanted to play for a team that had such great character and academic standards but was also a Division I competitor.
If you were speaking to a recruit, what would you tell them about the highlights and challenges of being a scholar-athlete at Davidson?
The highlight for me is definitely being with my teammates, who are my best friends, every single day. We get to spend so much time together and play the sport we love, which I am very grateful for especially given the times we are living in. There are a lot of challenges with balancing schoolwork, athletics and other extracurriculars, but every semester I get better at it. Time management is definitely a skill that I've had to learn along the way.
Philanthropic gifts from alums, families and friends of Davidson Athletics help fund our 21 Division I programs at Davidson. What does that support mean to you and how do you believe support for your program has enhanced your experience and that of your teammates and program overall?
I am so grateful for support that the wider Davidson community provides for our team. We are very fortunate to have such generous and caring donors who make it possible for us to play on the turf every day!
You've been a scholar-athlete at Davidson during unexpected and challenging circumstances in our country and around the world. How has that shaped who you are now versus who you were when you first came to campus, and how do you think it has affected the direction your career path is taking?
Living through a pandemic has shifted my perspective and made me much more aware of how privileged I am to attend a school like Davidson and have the opportunity to play a sport. I think in a time of such immense suffering and chaos, the smaller things like going to practice every day with your friends become what really matters.
What interests/paths do you plan to pursue after Davidson?
I am planning on working in luxury fashion after graduation this spring and will be moving to New York!
Favorite memory as a Wildcat?
Beating Yale my sophomore year is by far my favorite memory!
