NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Davidson field hockey team placed four players on the Atlantic 10 Conference end-of-season awards list, the league announced Thursday.
Senior Corynne Hammit was named A-10 Second Team, while freshmen Charlie Kabelac and Lena Stiebing were named All-Rookie, and senior Nellie Turnage earned All-Academic honors.
"I'm absolutely thrilled for all four of our honorees," said coach Zoe Almquist. "This was a special team, and while these are individual recognitions, I know that they came because this whole group puts team first and plays the roles we ask of them to their very best ability."
A forward, Hammit returned to the field this year after missing the 2019 season due to injury, and she immediately became a key part of the Wildcats' offensive attack. She led the team with 10 points and four goals, including three in the month of April against A-10 opponents, and will play as a graduate student next year at Kent State.
"This is a fabulous comeback story for Corynne and the middle chapter to her career," said Almquist. "She was essential for us this year, in her hockey IQ, and her ability to finish in the circle. I can't wait to watch the next part of her career unfold. I will always be grateful of the fight she showed to return from her injury, and this is recognition of that resilience."
Turnage is a four-year starter at midfield/forward, who made 64 career starts. She had seven points this year, including three goals. She scored twice against Central Michigan on March 18 and is a double-major in Political Science and Communication Studies.
"I'm in awe of Nellie's embodiment of the spirit of Davidson," said Almquist. "I can't think of a better representation of scholar-athlete than a 4-year starter, double major, Phi Beta Kappa with a nearly perfect GPA. She is everything we hope for from our Davidson graduates."
Kabelac and Stiebing made immediate impacts as freshmen. Kabelac, from Germany, started all 11 games, helping lead the Wildcats' improved defense.
"Charlie was instrumental to our team's improvement this year," said Almquist. "She brought so much experience and knowledge to the game, and we are excited to see where her career takes her."
Stiebing, of Netherlands, started all 11 contests at midfield/forward and scored the Wildcats' first two goals this season. She was named A-10 Rookie of the Week on March 2 and finished with seven points.
"Lena is so handy and dynamic on attack," said Almquist. "She created goals from no real space and was a driver behind so much of the attack we generated."
