Field Hockey Opens A-10 Play Saturday
3/12/2021 7:12:00 PM | Field Hockey
The beginning of the Atlantic 10 Conference season marks the Davidson field hockey team's return to action Saturday at Belk Turf Field.
The Wildcats (1-2) will host Saint Louis at 11 a.m., to start a six-game league slate. The A-10's eight teams are split into two divisions this year, and the Wildcats join Saint Louis, Richmond and VCU in the South. The teams will meet each other twice.
"The team is feeling both determined and optimistic going into league play this season," said coach Zoe Almquist. "It is a unique opportunity to play each A-10 opponent in our pod in a home-and-home format, and we welcome the challenge. I think that our non-conference play has helped prepare us for this weekend in that our newcomers have gotten some experience, and we have had the chance to try out a number of different scenarios against strong opponents. We hope to take all those lessons forward into A-10 play."
Davidson defeated the Billikens 2-0 in last year's meeting, after Amy Worscheh and Julia Smith scored in a five-minute span of the fourth quarter.
This season, freshman Lena Stiebing leads the Wildcats with two goals, two assists and six points. Corynne Hammit, Evie Lake, McGee Roman and Worscheh have also scored.

The Wildcats are playing Saturday's game in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and are working to raise money for the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson.
