KINGSTON, R.I. – After a back-and-forth, five-set affair, the Davidson Wildcats defeated the University of Rhode Island 3-2 in Atlantic 10 play on Saturday.
With the win, the 'Cats improve to 11-12 overall and 7-6 in league play.
Hattie Rodriguez anchored Davidson's offense, ending the day with 20 kills and two blocks. Freshman Isabel Decker had an electric day on defense, picking up 20 digs to pair with seven kills while libero Bella Brady had the match-high 28 digs.
Setters Xuan Nguyen and Jessie Doyal paced the offensive spread, as Nguyen finished with 28 assists and Doyal dished 24 of her own. Overall, Davidson held the Rams' offense to a .189 attacking percentage, due largely in part to the Wildcats' eight total blocks and 87 team digs.
The Wildcats took set one in a close 25-23 battle, as Rodriguez paced Davidson with a .556 attacking percentage (5 kills, 9 attempts) in the first frame. With the game tied at 20-all, Sola Omonije and Anela Davis shut down the Rams with a block at the net to give the 'Cats an advantage and from there, the duo would account for one more solo block and a kill to close out the set and take the early 1-0 match lead.
After the Rams took set two, 25-10, the Wildcats bounced back and won the third 25-22 thanks to a six-point tear midway through the frame, consisting of two kills from Rodriguez and a right-side strike from senior attacker Lauryn Albold.
With Rhode Island taking the fourth, 25-17, the 'Cats and Rams headed into a winner-take-all fifth set. As Decker led from the service line, Davidson started off the fifth with three straight points coming off of back-to-back Rodriguez kills and a block from Albold and Madeline Wynn.
Midway through the frame, Rodriguez and Davis shut down Rhode Island's lead attacker, Jamie Smith, and the 'Cats rattled off a five-point run to put the set out of reach, 15-6.
