DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson College mourns the loss of former football coach Guy "Tripp' Merritt, who passed away Monday.
Merritt led the Wildcats from 2005-12, helping Davidson win 31 games over that span and was named the Pioneer Football League Coach of the Year in 2006. Merritt's 2006 and 2007 'Cats were the last teams to earn consecutive winning seasons before Scott Abell rejuvenated the program in 2018.
Merritt first served Davidson as the defensive coordinator from 1993-99, before returning to take the helm in 2005.
A graduate of Charlotte, Merritt went on to serve in the United States Coast Guard before beginning his collegiate coaching career.
