In a time of being apart, the Davidson field hockey team has found a way to work together.
Or rather, to run together.
The Wildcats will participate in the Last Shift Virtual 5K Challenge on Monday, which is National Student-Athlete Day. Proceeds will benefit individuals and families who have been affected by cancer, and the Last Shift title references the college athletes who had their spring seasons cut short.
Three Wildcats, Corynne Hammit, Natalie Naticchia and Amani Sodhi, are working with The Headstrong Foundation to organize the event.
"I'm so proud of my team for discovering and choosing to take on this challenge," said head coach Zoe Almquist. "They are incredibly motivated and inspired by those around them, and this is a creative way to connect with the broader athlete community as well as support those affected by cancer all while staying safe at home."
Participants in the 5K are asked to wear team gear, run responsibly, with proper social distancing, and chronicle their efforts on social media with the hashtag #LastShift2020.
The Wildcats chose to participate as a way to encourage and support their fellow student-athletes across the country.
"As student-athletes, we are a community, and we want to celebrate all the hard work that is happening behind the scenes," said Hammitt, the team's service chair. "We are choosing to celebrate our new normal of training and stand with each other to overcome the adversity of not being together. Our goal is to come back even stronger with more fire and passion in the fall, and completing this 5K together is one way we are doing that."
