DAVIDSON, N.C. – Head football coach Scott Abell is excited to announce the addition of Alonzo Mathews to the coaching staff, announced Thursday.
Mathews, who will work with the Wildcat running backs, has extensive coaching experience at both the collegiate and high school levels. He spent the last four seasons on staff at Washington and Lee University, his first three years under Abell. Prior to his time at W&L, Mathews spent eight seasons as a coordinator at the high school level.
"We are not just adding a great motivator and coach to our Wildcat family, but we are adding a great mentor and man," said Abell.
Mathews first worked under Abell in 2002, serving as the running back and defensive backs coach at Amherst County High School.
Mathews was a running back at Liberty University where he graduated with a degree in Sports Management in 2000 and later earned his master's in counseling in 2010.
Outside of football, he is very involved in numerous youth leadership and character-building programs. He currently serves as the Co-Director of I.R.O.N Leadership and Character Program in central Virginia.
