DAVIDSON, N.C. – A first half Hoya goal proved the difference as Davidson field hockey dropped its season opener to Georgetown Friday evening at Belk Turf Field, 1-0.
The Wildcats outshot the Hoyas (10-9) and won the penalty corner advantage (8-5), but Sydney Stephenson's strike off a corner was all Georgetown needed to seal the victory. Both teams registered 5 shots on goal apiece.
Davidson's had a great chance came in the second half off a corner with a shot to the left side of the cage by Caitlyn Gund, but Georgetown netminder Ciara Weets was there to mark it.
The 'Cats also had an early chance in the first few minutes of play as Kristin Kisa fired a shot off Weets' pads right back to her, but she was unable to make the angle and get a clean shot off.
Five 'Cats registered shots led by Kisa with four - two of them on cage. Stephenson and Lindsay Getz registered two shots apiece. Wildcat goalie Sarah Zeszotarski made four stops in the losing effort.
The Wildcats return to Belk Turf Field Sunday, Aug. 26 for a non-conference tilt with Towson. Game-time is slated for noon.
