DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson field hockey will host a program-high 12 home games as part of their 2018 season, unveiled by head coach Ginny Turner Thursday afternoon.
The Wildcats are looking to better from their 2-16 record a year ago and return to the Atlantic 10 Tournament, where they clinched the fourth seed in 2015, a season that garnered Turner A-10 Coach of the Year honors.
Four conference matchups highlight the home slate, and the 'Cats will face two NCAA Tournament participants in reigning A-10 Champions Saint Joseph's and ACC opponent Wake Forest. Davidson will also host nationally ranked William & Mary for a Sunday showdown in September and faces modern-day power Old Dominion in a preseason exhibition.
"I am excited about this schedule and the challenges it will bring," Turner said. "I think opening up at home and playing on our own turf so much this fall will be very advantageous for us. Our A-10 schedule is always very competitive and we have picked up some great nonconference opponents. We have a talented group of returning players who made great progress this spring and with our incoming athletes this is a fantastic schedule for this team to take on in the fall."
For the sixth time in seven seasons, Davidson opens the season facing Georgetown, welcoming the Hoyas on Friday, Aug. 24, before welcoming Towson, Rider, LIU Brooklyn, and App. State over the span of the next two weeks to conclude their opening stint.
The first road trek of the season will have the 'Cats facing former NorPac opponent UC Davis in a neutral-site matchup in Farmville, Va., before returning home to open up league play with the Hawks of SJU, then remaining home for W&M and Longwood to wrap up the mini home stand.
The 'Cats hit the road again, this time for a three-game trip, traveling to Saint Louis to face the Billikens before heading to Amherst and New Haven to face UMass and Yale.
Davidson then finds itself back at Belk Turf field for a three-game tilt, hosting conference foes Lock Haven and St. Francis before a nonconference clash with Central Michigan. A weekend on the road at Richmond and La Salle concludes the 'Cats A-10 road schedule, and they wrap things up at home with VCU on Friday, Oct. 26.
The 'Cats will conclude their 2018 regular season in Winston-Salem, facing Wake in a Sunday affair.
