DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson College head football coach Scott Abell welcomed five new coaches to the staff, announced Thursday.
"We could not be more excited about the football staff we have put together," said Abell. "They are men of great character and football knowledge and will be great leaders for our program and players."
Steven Jackson – Defensive Ends
Steven Jackson comes to Davidson after a one-year stint at Washington and Lee University as the defensive line coach. Two of Jackson's defensive lineman garnered post-season awards and the unit led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in sacks (26) and rushing yards allowed per game. In 2017 the Generals defensive ranked number one in scoring and total defense in the ODAC.
Prior to W&L, Jackson served as an assistant football coach and Foundations of Technology and was a teacher at South Hagerstown High School in Maryland from 2012-2016. In his role as assistant coach, he served as the offensive coordinator, strength and conditioning coordinator and offensive line coach.
Jackson earned a bachelor of science in physical education and health from Shepherd University in 2012. He was a four-year starter on the offensive line and was a team captain for his senior season. He was a two-time all-conference honoree, including as a senior when he received First Team All-WVIAC, first team All-Region and All-America honors. As a junior, Jackson helped led the Rams to a conference title and the NCAA Division II Semifinals.
In high school, Jackson was an all-district, all-region and all-state honoree at Amherst County, leading the Lancers to a state championship in 2007.
Jackson and his wife, Lisa, have been married since 2012.
Tim Maypray – Running Backs
Tim Maypray spent the last three seasons at Virginia Military Institute, working in the running backs room. A 2010 graduate of VMI, he recorded a standout athletic career in football with the Keydets, culminated with his VMI Intercollegiate Athletic Award recognition given to the school's most outstanding athlete.
While earning numerous accolades as a receiver, return specialist, running back and quarterback, he was named All-Big South as a kick returner in 2007 and punt returner in 2009, and was selected second team All-Big South at wide receiver in 2007 and quarterback in 2008. Maypray was also named Big South Freshman of the Year in 2006. He holds conference records for all-purpose yards (6,129) and registered 10 games of 200 yards or more. He holds the Keydet record for all-purpose yards in a single game, rattling off 346 yards against Charleston Southern in 2007.
Jon Berlin – Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers
Jon Berlin joins the Wildcat staff following a five-year stint at Washington and Lee University where he worked with the linebackers and served as co-defensive coordinator for his final three seasons. During the last three years, he helped coach the team to a 24-10 record and two ODAC Championships. Washington & Lee Linebackers garnered four All-ODAC, two All-South Region, one All-American, and one ODAC Defensive Player of the Year honor during that period. The 2017 defensive unit was tops in the league in total defense, both scoring and rushing defense, interceptions and sacks.
Prior to Washington & Lee, Berlin served as head coach of Rustburg High School from 2008-12. Berlin also had stints as an assistant at Amherst County High (2002-06), Monticello High (1999-01), Western Albemarle High (1996-99), and Albemarle High (1991-95).
Jon Berlin is married to Suzanne and they have three children: Hannah (16), Jack (13), and Will (10).
Vince Munch – Offensive Line
Vince Munch joins the Davidson staff after spending a year with the St. Andrews University Knights of the NAIA. He served as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator for the first-year program.
Munch is also a familiar member of Abell's former coaching arsenal, spending five seasons on the Generals staff from 2012-16. He got his start in coaching as tight ends coach in 2011 at Marietta College.
Munch graduated from Ferrum College with a bachelor's in physical education in the Spring of 2011 where he was a four-year letter winner at tight end.
Porter Abell – Wide Receivers
Porter Abell joins the staff following a collegiate playing career at the University of Richmond. Porter, who appeared in 48 games for the Spiders, saw time as a quarterback, running back and eventually slid into a role as a wide receiver. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Spiders and helped lead the team to a CAA Championship in 2015 and a national ranking of number three in the country.
Prior to Richmond, Porter finished his high school career in 2012 being named a finalist for the AA Virginia State Player of the Year and Regional and Roanoke Times Offensive Player of the Year.
During the fall of 2017, Porter served as a volunteer assistant coach with the Collegiate School Athletic Department, breaking down game film. He is the son of head coach Scott Abell.
