Davidson Drops League Opener to UMass, 4-0

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson field hockey (0-5) suffered its second shutout of the season, falling 4-0 Friday to defending Atlantic 10 Tournament Champions Massachusetts (5-2) in their league opener at Belk Turf Field.
Senior captain Anna Brewer was the only 'Cat to turn in more than two shots, while four others turned in on-target attempts.
The Davidson defense held the Minutewomen to just five shots in the first half, exhibiting strong backfield play. UMass got on the board 12 minutes into the contest, capitalizing on a tip off from a penalty corner. They added to their lead, closing out the half with a pass around to the right corner of the cage after another penalty corner.
Davidson looked to break through midway through the second frame, being awarded a penalty stroke after a takedown within the arc. Veteran captain Lauren Gampper took the shot, aiming to the high right corner, but the MInutewomen's keeper Emily Hazard got a glove on it to keep the shutout intact.
UMass added two goals in the second half to solidify the victory.
Davidson returns to the turf Tuesday, traveling to Durham, N.C., to face North Carolina in a neutral-site matchup held at Duke.
