NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Atlantic 10 Conference released its women's lacrosse end of the season major award winners and all-conference teams Wednesday, and Davidson's Nicole Pettiglio, Shayne Antolini along with Sarah Kopp were each honored.
The senior Pettiglio was named to the all-second team at midfield, while Antolini earned a spot on the league's all-rookie team. Kopp was honored for her success on the field and in the classroom by being named to the all-academic team.
It marks the third year in a row at least three Wildcats have earned end of the season honors. In 2015, they had four players get honored during their first year in the A-10.
Senior co-captain Pettiglio led the way, again showcasing her all-around game. A native of Westford, Mass., she has career highs this season of 29 goals, 30 points and 48 draw controls, which are the seventh-most in a single season. She ranks just outside the top-10 all-time with 79 draw controls, while owning career marks of 75 goals and 82 points to go with 70 groundballs and 36 caused turnovers.
Pettiglio, who has started 53 of her 68 career games, led a comeback victory at VCU this year by scoring six of her career-high seven goals during a game-changing rally. It was a team season high for goals scored. The senior has registered eight multi-goal games this year to push her career total to 19. In addition, she is 10-for-16 on free-position shots.
Antolini gave Davidson its third straight season with a first-year player on the A-10 All-Rookie Team. The midfielder has had an outstanding freshman campaign by ranking third on the team with 34 points behind 16 goals and a team-best 18 assists, while starting all 16 of Davidson's games this year. The Babylon, N.Y. has added 16 groundballs, 24 draw controls and six caused turnovers.
In a 17-6 win at La Salle, Antolini registered season bests of four goals, four assists and eight points, which was a team season high for points. She has a combined 10 multi-goal and assist games this year.
After earning a spot on the all-rookie team a year ago, Kopp becomes the first Wildcat to be named to the A-10 All-Academic Team. The three-time A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree and a Davidson Bryan Scholar has a near 4.0 grade point average, while contributing all over the field. A native of Victor, N.Y., Kopp has started all 33 of her career games played during her two years, while adding 19 goals, four assists and 23 points.
This year the sophomore has career bests in every category, including goals (11), points (14), groundballs (19), draw controls (31-second on team) and caused turnovers (11).
UMass, which went undefeated at 9-0 in league play, swept nearly all the major awards, taking home offensive and defensive players of the year (Holly Turner / Sarah Crowley) along with midfielder of the year (Hannah Murphy). Coach of the Year went to UMass' Angela McMahon, while the league's rookie of the year honor went to Sam Geiersbach of Richmond.
Davidson (7-9, 5-4 A-10) reached the A-10 Lacrosse Championship by earning the fifth seed after going 5-4 during the regular season in league play. It will face off against fourth-seeded George Mason Thursday, May 4, at 1 p.m. If the Wildcats advance, they would take on top-seeded UMass Friday at 1 p.m.
