BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- In their final contest of the 2017 campaign, Davidson field hockey pulled off the thrilling victory, defeating second-year program LIU Brooklyn 1-0 in a shootout at LIU Brooklyn Field Sunday.
The Wildcats finish the year at 2-16, while the Blackbirds slip to 4-13.
Rookie Nellie Turnage played the hero, delivering the game-winning goal after the Wildcats and Blackbirds remained scoreless through two overtimes and tied 2-2 in a stroke-off.
After failing to find the cage through regulation and both overtimes, Davidson was forced to enter its first shootout of the season. The Wildcats dominated the contest with a 25-8 advantage in shots, including 14 on-goal.
After seniors Anna Brewer and Hannah Fisher each made their shots to put Davidson up 2-0 in the shootout, LIU Brooklyn delivered the dramatics, making their final two shots to remain in a stalemate.
Turnage, the fifth shooter for the 'Cats, took the ball low and used her speed, pulling the ball right around the goalkeeper and pushed it into the back of the cage, handing Davidson its second win of the season.
Junior Leigha Nortier led the offense, recording six shots (three on-target). Turnage and fellow freshman Caitlyn Gund also turned in three shots on-goal each.
