PHILADELPHIA – A late equalizer from senior captain Katherine English was short lived, as Davidson field hockey (1-8, 0-3 A-10) dropped its third Atlantic 10 contest, falling 2-1 to La Salle (4-5, 2-1 A-10) Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia.
English scored off a penalty corner, taking the sent ball from junior Lauren Gampper and sending it to the back of the cage. It was English's second goal of the season and Gampper's first assist of the year.
The Wildcats were held to six shots, with senior Lauren McFayden recording a team-high two (both on-target), while limiting the Explorers to five. Sophomore Bean Rodriguez added two saves to bring her season total to 39.
La Salle attacked incredibly early, scoring just 50 seconds into the contest. The Explorers' Jess Hoffman took a cross from the right side and sent it across to the left and past Rodriguez into the net. Hoffman recorded the only three shots on-goal for La Salle during the first period, and led the team in shots.
For Davidson, senior Becca Jones and McFayden tallied the only shots during the first frame, both coming up as saves for La Salle's Rachel Hartman in goal.
The Wildcats kept possession on their offensive half of the field for the majority of the second period, with Gampper taking a corner and firing a shot early in the frame. About ten minutes later, the 'Cats were awarded another corner, when Gampper laced the ball into English for the goal.
With the game notched at 1-1, La Salle began to aggressively attack, being awarded four corners across the next ten minutes and taking advantage of three Davidson yellow cards. The Explorers regained the lead moments later, with a shot across the circle that sophomore Logan Oh tapped in for the gamewinner.
The 'Cats return home, welcoming in-state foe Appalachian State Friday and California's Pacific on Sunday, both at Belk Turf Field.
