RICHMOND, Va. -- Davidson field hockey dropped a 3-1 contest Friday to Atlantic 10 Preseason favorite Richmond, slipping to 1-7 (0-2) on the season, while the Spiders improve to 4-4 (2-0).
Senior Lauren McFayden turned in a career-high three shots, all on goal, and tallied her second goal of the season late in the second period. The 'Cats were held to just seven shots, the others coming from fellow seniors Becca Jones and Katherine English, junior Paige Albert, and sophomore Courtney Byler. Sophomore goalkeeper Bean Rodriguez notched four saves.
The contest was scoreless at halftime; McFayden and Jones registering the only shots of the frame for Davidson.
The Spiders didn't wait long to attack in the final period, scoring a goal just six and half minutes in. Richmond then added to their lead less than five minutes later, dribbling the ball down to the corner of the cage and shooting it past Rodriguez.
They then added more insurance in the 55th minute, scoring off a far-side pass. Down 3-0, with less than ten minutes to play, the 'Cats were awarded a corner.
Junior Anna Brewer took the PC, sending it in to English, who fired off a shot but it was saved. McFayden followed up, picking up the rebound and sending it to the back of the cage.
Richmond had three different scorers in the contest, with two being assisted by Abby Lyons and keeper Amanda Hoyt registering five saves.
Davidson returns to action Sunday, taking on conference foe La Salle in Philadelphia.
