WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Davidson field hockey (1-4) faced its first ranked opponent of the season, falling 6-0 to No. 11 Wake Forest (4-2) at Kentner Field in Winston-Salem, N.C., Tuesday evening.
Sophomore keeper Bean Rodriguez penciled 10 saves into the scoresheet, marking a new career-high from the eight she recorded Sunday at Longwood.
The 'Cats only two shots came from a pair of seniors in Lauren McFayden and captain Katherine English.
The Deacons maintained possession for most of the first half, scoring three goals within 15 minutes of each other to set the tone. The first came on a quick fire down the middle, the second a sneak behind the goalie from the left side of the cage, and the third resulted from a penalty corner pass. Late in the first half, Davidson notched its first defensive save of the season, courtesy of junior Anna Brewer, who deflected the ball from the open cage and sent it off the right of the field.
With a 3-0 lead to start the second frame, Wake continued to control the ball, firing off a shot two minutes in that Rodriguez was able to knock away. Only a minute later, they found the back of the cage again to go up 4-0.
Davidson worked its way to the offensive half of the field, applying pressure and receiving a corner at the 57 minute mark. The ball found its way to the awaiting stick of English, who launched it mid-air from the top of the arc but was blocked.
Wake scored their final two goals within the last 10 minutes of the game to add insurance and take the 6-0 victory.
Freshman Nicole Pluta led the Wake offense, firing seven shots (three on-goal) and picking up one goal. Sophomore Jule Grashoff led the team in on-target attempts, with five of her six shots being on-target while adding three assists.
The Wildcats return to action Friday, opening up Atlantic 10 play by hosting VCU (1-3) at Belk Turf Field.
