FARMVILLE, Va. – Despite scoring two goals within three minutes of each other late in the second period, Davidson field hockey's comeback fell short, and the 'Cats (1-3) dropped a 4-3 contest to former NorPac foe Longwood (4-3) Sunday in Farmville, Va.
Three different members of the squad scored in the affair, with junior Paige Albert scoring her first of the season, senior Becca Jones adding her second, and classmate and captain Anne Federico picking up her team-leading third goal of the year. Jones led the offensive effort, posting six shots (five on-target), and sophomore goalkeeper Bean Rodriguez turned in a career-high five saves.
Longwood attacked early, scoring 10 minutes in off a rebounded shot that the Lancers sent as a line drive back up the middle of the cage.
Albert netted the equalizer with about fifteen minutes remaining in the half, intercepting a Lancer pass intended for the keeper and deflected it in to an open goal off the bounce. It was her first of the season. The draw was short, as Longwood regained the lead with just two minutes remaining off a deflection from a penalty corner.
The Lancers controlled possession for the beginning parts of the second half, pressuring the Davidson defense on multiple occasions, and adding insurance with a third goal 57 minutes into the contest. Almost immediately following that, the Lancers continued to pressure, firing a shot that went wide. On the restart, a cross to the middle and pass to the right on an open shot delivered Longwood's fourth goal of the contest.
Jones responded quickly, as the 'Cats began to apply pressure to the Lancer defense with a little under ten minutes remaining. Coming off a penalty corner, Jones took a shot that was saved, and collected her own rebound, lifting it into the left side of the net and putting the Wildcats within striking distance at 4-2.
Federico then joined in, only three minutes later, chipping in her third goal in as many games. With just two and a half minutes remaining in the game, Longwood played aggressively, assuring themselves the victory before a Wildcats last-second shot could occur.
Davidson remains on the road, traveling to Winston-Salem, N.C., Tuesday for a tilt with Wake Forest at 6:00 p.m.
