The Davidson Athletic Fund team welcomed new faces, instituted new initiatives and successfully reached their fundraising goals in the 2015-16 fiscal year that ended June 30. Including gifts and pledges, $8.4 million was raised for Davidson Athletics. The DAF exceeded its $2.2 million goal for current-use funds, finishing with $2,271,210. In addition, the DAF established a new record of $1,414,413 in sport-specific fundraising for the college's 21 varsity programs. Scholarships were a major piece of the equation with $5 million raised in commitments to athletic scholarships.
During this year's Wildcat Top 21 challenge, new rules and an additional $5,000 at stake helped propel first-time winner, women's tennis, to the top of the leaderboard.
The Class of 2016 continued a strong tradition of giving back with 92.2 percent of scholar athletes making a senior class gift, slightly higher than the 91 percent participation rate for the entire class. Alumni participation reached 57 percent, a leading figure nationally.
"It was an outstanding year for Davidson Athletics and for the college overall," said Jim Murphy, director of athletics. "Gifts made through the DAF provide our scholar athletes and our coaching staffs with the tools to compete at the highest levels. Your generosity allows top athletes to choose Davidson and to use their time on campus—both in the classroom and as part of a team—in meaningful, productive ways. Thank you for contributing to the success of Davidson Athletics."
Other successful highlights for the DAF and Athletics include:
