DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson field hockey has announced its schedule for the 2016 season, featuring a program-high 11 home games played at Belk Turf Field.
The Wildcats are coming off a 2015 campaign where they clinched their first Atlantic 10 Tournament bid, facing top-seeded Richmond and falling 2-1 in the opening round.
Four conference matches and a Tuesday night tilt with 2015 NCAA Runner-Up UNC highlight the home slate, as the 'Cats will face a total of four NCAA Tournament participants, including a preseason exhibition with Duke.
"This is going to be a challenging and exciting schedule," head coach Ginny Turner, the reigning A-10 Coach of the Year, said of this year's slate. "It is great to open up our season at home and have so many games on our own 'turf'. We have a lot of tough opponents this year, but I have a lot of confidence in this team. Our A-10 games will be tough, but we are ready to build on our success from last year and continue with a strong program."
For the fifth time in six seasons, Davidson opens the season facing Georgetown, welcoming the Hoyas on Friday, Aug. 26, before completing the homestand with Ball State (Sunday, Aug. 28) and LIU Brooklyn (Saturday, Sept. 3). 2016 marks the first season of Division I action for the Blackbirds.
The squad then heads to Farmville, Va., to face Longwood (Sunday, Sept. 11) and plays a midweek matchup against 2015 NCAA Tournament participant Wake Forest (Wednesday, Sept. 13) before returning home to begin league action with VCU on Friday, Sept. 16.
The 'Cats remain at home to host William and Mary (Sunday, Sept. 18) and then take on another two-game road trip, facing 2015 A-10 regular season champions Richmond (Friday, Sept. 23) and then traveling to Philadelphia to face La Salle (Sunday, Sept. 25).
Davidson then returns home for its longest homestretch of the season, playing five games from Sept. 30 (Appalachian State) to October 9 (A-10 foe Lockhaven). It is during this span that the Cats welcome UNC.
A date with 2015 A-10 Tournament Champions UMass (Friday, Oct. 14) highlights the final road swing of the season, where Davidson faces three other squads before returning home for the conclusion of its 2016 season, facing league member Saint Joseph's (Saturday, Oct. 29).
The A-10 Tournament, which features the top-four teams, will be begin Nov. 4 in Richmond, Va., at host VCU.
