DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson field hockey team will face tough competition throughout its eight game spring schedule, including two tilts at home, head coach Ginny Turner announced Wednesday.
"I am excited about this spring schedule. It will give us a lot to learn from and really challenge the team against some excellent opponents," said Turner. "It will be nice to open up at home and give everyone some experience before we face some top programs. We return a strong group of athletes that will continue to gain confidence and game knowledge from these spring games."
Davidson will open the 2016 spring schedule with a play day at Belk Turf Field, March 19. The Wildcats will host Queens and Newberry. The play day will be held in conjunction with Davidson's annual Alumnae Game. All former players are invited back to Belk Turf Field to participate.
The Wildcats will then welcome ACC power Wake Forest, March 24. The Demon Deacons finished the 2015 campaign ranked 7th in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. Davidson and Wake Forest met last season, with the then-No. 5 Demon Deacons coming away with a 2-0 win.
Spring action continues April 2, as Davidson travels to Appalachian State for a play day. The Wildcats will face the Mountaineers and Longwood.
The Wildcats will wrap up their spring schedule against a strong field at Duke, April 9. Davidson will face three teams, which finished the 2015 season ranked. In addition to the host, the 'Cats will take on reigning ACC Conference Champions Carolina and Big East powerhouse Old Dominion.
Under the direction of Turner, the 2015 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Davidson returns 17 players from last season. The Wildcats posted a 5-3 conference record and earned a fourth-seed in the A-10 Conference tournament.
