Volleyball Sweeps George Mason Friday

FAIRFAX, Va. – After suffering back-to-back straight set losses, Davidson volleyball responded in strong fashion, downing Atlantic 10 foe George Mason Friday in straight sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-18). The 'Cats pick up their fourth sweep of the year.
Davidson returns to .500 in A-10 play at 4-4, and improve to 9-13 overall, while Mason drops to 4-17 overall and remains winless in league action.
Junior Kelly Friers led the offensive effort with 11 kills, with sophomore Sabrina Shepherd collecting seven and senior Emily Franklin adding six.
Franklin continued her season-long trend of dominant defense at the net, recording nine total blocks (three solo, six assisted). She now ranks sixth in program history for single-season solo blocks (31), ninth for single-season total blocks (131), fifth all-time in total blocks (409) and solo blocks (71).
After Mason picked up the first three points of the opening stanza, the 'Cats replied taking four straight and eight of the next 10 points. Davidson continued to control the set, recording another four-point rally late to go up 21-15 and eventually take the set, 25-17.
The 'Cats kept with the same routine, using small rallies to gain and maintain a lead throughout the frame. After pulling off a four-point rally to go up 13-11, the 'Cats then recorded five unanswered to arrive at set point, and go on to take the set 25-20 off a kill from Franklin.
The Wildcats continued to command the court, using three separate rallies (five, four, and four points) to build momentum and lead by as many as seven points on two different occasions. Davidson took advantage of late attack errors from the Patriots and secured the set 25-18 and pull off the sweep.
The 'Cats return to the court Saturday, making the short trip to Washington, D.C., to face George Washington. First serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
