NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Davidson field hockey team has been selected to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10 standings, while sophomore Hannah Fisher has been named to the Preseason All-Conference team, the league announced Tuesday.
Davidson, which returns 20 student-athletes from last season, also welcomes six newcomers. The Wildcats return offensive threats Melissa Funsten and Becca Jones. Funsten, a second-team all-conference selection tallied three goals and three assists a season ago. Jones finished the year with three goals and two assists. Senior Emily Leytham will anchor the Wildcats' defensive after registering .771 save percentage a season ago.
Massachusetts was picked as the favorite to win the conference championship, while Richmond, Lock Haven, Saint Francis and Saint Joseph's rounded out the top five.
An all-conference rookie selection last season, Fisher started all 19 games in the midfield. The Fredericksburg, Virgina, native finished the season with seven points on two goals and three assists. Fisher helped Davidson finish the year on a high note with an unbelievable 1-0 double-overtime victory over A-10 rival VCU in the Wildcats' last home game.
Davidson will look to improve on its inaugural season in the A-10 with a competitive nonconference slate. The Wildcats open the 2015 campaign this weekend a two-game road swing at Georgetown and Lehigh.
