Davidson Wraps Up a Successful Year of Fundraising
7/15/2015 1:42:00 PM | DAF
The 2014-15 year brought many successes and firsts for Davidson Athletics. The same held true for the Davidson Athletic Fund, with a record-breaking $11,074,642 in gifts and commitments raised for athletics. Annual support, which includes restricted and unrestricted gifts and current use scholarships, reached a new high with over $2,736,000 raised. Some of the capital projects underway this year include the Harry L. Vance Athletic Center, installation of the new tennis courts behind Baker Sports Complex, construction on the Davidson Golf House at River Run and various improvements to baseball, football and field hockey facilities.
This fiscal year was also the first public year of the college's $425 million campaign, Game Changers: Inspiring Leaders to Transform the World. To date, the campaign has surpassed $257 million! Successul fundraising for the Gary Andrew Scholarship allowed it to be awarded to an incoming male cross country & track athlete for the 2015-16 year and is now close to being endowed. The Scott Applegate Men's Soccer Scholarship is another example of alumni providing current use scholarship support. In total, alumni, parents and friends gave over $530,000 for current use scholarship this fiscal year.
Restricted and unrestricted gifts accounted for nearly 51% of the annual dollars raised. The move to the Atlantic10 will continue to put pressure on the athletic department budget with regards to travel and equipment as well as recruiting, training and support. Additional resources are essential for Davidson coaches to be able to attract the right student athletes who can succeed both academically and athletically at Davidson.
The graduating class of 2015 set the tone for giving this year, with 88.5% of student athletes making a gift to the DAF. By May 15, 97% of senior student athletes made a gift to the college overall. Davidson athletic alumni also stepped up to the challenge, with 29.5% supporting the DAF and a remarkable 58.4% making a gift to Davidson College.
The DAF successfully hosted numerous alumni and stewardship events in 2014-15, including the James P. Hendrix Award, the 25th annual Hall of Fame Celebration and the 21st Annual Dr. Tom Scott Memorial Golf Tournament. In addition to tailgates, coaches' lunches and countless alumni gatherings on the road, the DAF also sponsored the 25th Anniversary of Head Baseball Coach Dick Cooke. In April, the DAF launched its first-ever Thank-A-Thon with over 1,200 donors receiving a call or written note from a student athlete or coach.
For fiscal year 2015, Davidson College raised $63,882,185 in gifts and commitments. The Fund for Davidson achieved 59.5% alumni participation and brought in a record $17,771,435 in annual dollars.
