DAVIDSON, N.C. – Five Davidson College football standouts earned preseason All-American honors from USA College Football on Friday morning.
Wide receiver William Morris was named a First-Team Preseason All-American, while running back Jeffrey Keil, running back Austin Wells, defensive lineman Chris Woods and place kicker Trevor Smith were named honorable mention Preseason All-Americans.
With 12,297 student-athletes competing on the gridiron for 122 programs in 2014, USA College Football recognized the top four percent of returning players (500) on their preseason All-American teams.
This is the second All-America honor for Morris, as he was placed on the 2014 Beyond Sports Network FCS All-America fourth team this past season. The All-Pioneer Football League first team selection finished the season with a school-record 1,224 yards receiving and 98 receptions, the season most in a season at Davidson.
Keil rushed for a Davidson freshman all-time best 725 yards and also collected eight touchdowns that matched Eric Ferguson's rookie school standard to be named the Pioneer Football League's Freshman Offensive Player of the Year. The rising sophomore recorded the best single-season rushing effort by a Wildcat overall since Jonathon Hubbard's 769-yard, 13-touchdown campaign in 2006.
Smith kicked for Cats as a freshman and converted 28-29 PAT's and 9-13 FG's, including a 44 yard FG to send the game into overtime against Dayton. The Tampa, Fla., native also kicked off for the Wildcats and had 5 touchbacks, and recorded 3 tackles.
This is the first-career honor for Wells and Woods. Wells played in all 11 games, finishing his freshman season with 68 carries for 240 yards, while Woods completed his junior season with 11 games played and recorded 26 tackles, including 5.5 for a loss.
The Wildcats will open the 2015 season on Sept. 5 at Southern Conference foe The Citadel at 6 p.m. The home season commences on Sept. 12 against Catawba at 7 p.m. at Richardson Stadium.
