No. 4 Davidson Faces Top-Ranked Richmond in Semifinals

DAVIDSON, N.C. – For the first time in program history, the Davidson field hockey team will head to Philadelphia to compete at the 2015 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship.
The Wildcats, who are seeded fourth, will face top-seeded Richmond in the second semifinal game slated for Friday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. at Ellen Ryan Field on the campus of Saint Joseph's.
The Field
Davidson is one of four teams competing in the 2015 Atlantic 10 Championship.
Reigning conference champion Richmond used its 7-1 A-10 regular season record to claim the top-seed. The Spiders will be gunning for its ninth conference title.
By virtue of the league's three-way tie-breaker procedures, Massachusetts (9-8) claimed the second seed thanks to its win over Davidson and Saint Joseph's earlier in the season. The Hawks took the head-to-head battle with the Wildcats to garner the third seed.
Schedule of Event
No. 2 Massachusetts will play No. 3 Saint Joseph's Friday at 11 a.m. Davidson and Richmond will meet in the second game. The two winners from Friday's games will meet on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the finals, with the winner earning the conference's automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

About Davidson College
The Wildcats carry an 8-10 overall mark and a 5-3 conference record in their inaugural appearance at the A-10 Championship.
Davidson finished the regular season in a three-way tie for second place with Massachusetts and Saint Joseph's.
In total, 11 Wildcats have at least one point this season, led by senior captain Anna Davis' 16 (7g, 4a) and Melissa Funsten's 15 (6g, 3a). Junior Becca Jones and Anne Federico have each found the back of the net four times, while Paige Albert, Katherine English and Lucy Pidcock have each tallied three scores.
The senior class has stepped up immensely in 2015, accounting for 15 of the Wildcats' 26 goals and 38 of 73 points, with Davis, Funsten and Pidcock leading the way.
Last Time Out
The Davidson field hockey team closed out their regular season with a 2-1 loss against Atlantic 10 foe Massachusetts at Belk Turf Field, Oct. 31.
After trailing Massachusetts, 1-0, Anna Davis knotted the score with her seventh goal of the season at the 55 minute mark. Off a corner, Becca Jones fired a shot, which was blocked by a defender to the stick of Davis. Davis launched a shot past goalie Sam Carolino.
Massachusetts scored the go ahead goal just four minutes later to secure the win.
When It All Comes Together
In Davidson's eight victories this season, the Wildcats are outscoring opponents, 21-2. Including five of Emily Leytham's shutouts, the defense has limited shot and penalty corner chances for the opposition, giving the offense plenty of opportunities to average its 2.62 goals per game in wins.
Defending The Cage
Senior Emily Leytham has enjoyed an impressive final season for Davidson, posting 82 saves in 18 games. The Charlottesville, Va., native is turning away 78 percent of shots, which ranks second in the conference and 10th in the nation. Her goals against average (1.36) is good for fourth in the A-10 and 13th in the nation.
Leytham has registered 5.1 shutouts, second among conference leader.
2015 NFHCA Senior Game
Senior captain Melissa Funsten was among 38 Division I field hockey players chosen to participate in the 2015 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Senior Game. The contest will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the University of Michigan. The Raleigh, N.C., native has been a constant force in the offensive third this season. She has started all 18 games, notching six goals and three assists for 15 points. Defensively, she has registered a team-high three defensive stops.
The Season Series with Richmond
This year, Davidson is 1-0 against Richmond on the field. The Wildcats and Spiders last met at Belk Turf Field, Oct. 16. Junior Anne Federico scored the game-winning goal less than five minutes into the first overtime session as Davidson earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Richmond.
Scouting Richmond (11-8, 7-1 A-10)
Top-seeded Richmond carries an 11-8 overall mark and a 7-1 record in Atlantic 10 play after claiming its ninth regular season title. Six of Richmond's eight losses have come at the hands of top-20 opponents, including its most recent defeat against No. 12 Boston College, 2-0. Davidson handed the Spiders its lone loss in conference play.
Kelly Quinn sets the tone for the Richmond offense, registering 17 points on seven goals and three assists this year. Avery Safford is second for the Spiders with 13 points (two goals and nine assists), while Amy Cooke has registered three goals and two assists for eight points.
Goaltenders Emily Braunewell and Amanda Hoyt have split time in the cage for the Spiders. Braunewell has registered 47 saves in seven games to own a .734 save percentage and a 1.78 goals against average. Hoyt has turned away 30 shots in 11 games to register a .592 save percentage and a 2.03 goals against average.
