NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Head coach Ginny Turner was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, while seniors Melissa Funsten, Anna Davis and Emily Leytham earned All-Conference honors, the league announced Thursday.
In addition to Turner earning the league's top coaching honor, Funsten was named First-Team All-Conference, while Davis and Leytham were voted to the A-10's Second Team.
After a disappointing first season in the Atlantic 10, which saw Davidson post a 2-6 conference record, Turner guided the Wildcats to a fourth seed at the 2015 A-10 Field Hockey Championship. This year, Davidson posted a 5-3 record in league contests, registering key victories over Richmond, Saint Francis, La Salle, VCU and Saint Louis. Now in her ninth season at the helm, Turner has been named conference coach of the year twice (1 NorPac, 1 A-10).
A 2014 A-10 All-Conference Second-Team honoree, Funsten has started each of the Wildcats' 18 games this season. The team captain recorded six goals and three assists for 15 total points, second on the team. Defensively, the Raleigh, N.C., native tallied three defensive saves, which ranks tied for third among conference leaders. Her presence in the backfield has helped Davidson to five shutouts this season.
Leading the Wildcats with 18 points, Davis picked up her first postseason A-10 conference honor. The senior captain has started all 18 games as a forward, recording a team-high seven goals and four assists. The Salisbury, Md., native registered the game-winning goal against La Salle.
Leytham has posted an 8-9 record this season between the pipes for the Wildcats turning away 82 shots. The Charlottesville, Va., native has picked up five shutouts, good for second among conference leaders. Leytham's .781 save percentage ranks second in the league, and 10th in the nation. Her goals against average (1.36) is good for fourth in the A-10 and 13th in the nation. This is Leytham's first A-10 postseason honor.
Davidson will make its inaugural appearance in the A-10 Field Hockey Championship at 2 p.m. tomorrow, in the second semifinal game against top-seeded Richmond.
