DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey closed out their regular season with a 2-1 loss against Atlantic 10 foe Massachusetts Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the game, Davidson honored its seven graduating seniors -- Connie Cape, Anna Davis, Melissa Funsten, Becky Johnson, Danielle King, Emily Leytham and Lucy Pidcock were recognized for their contributions to the program.
The first half progressed slowly, with neither side really taking advantage of opportunities. Davidson narrowly outshot Massachusetts 3-2, while the Minutewomen held a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners.
The scoring started when Massachusetts (9-8, 5-3 A-10) capitalized on a penalty corner early in the second frame. Anne Dijkstra sent a shot to the back of the cage to put the Minutewomen ahead, 1-0.
Davidson retaliated at the 55-minute mark when Anna Davis buried her seventh goal of the season. Off a corner, Becca Jones fired a shot, which was blocked by a defender to the stick of Davis. Davis launched a shot past goalkeeper Sam Carolino to even the score, 1-1.
Four minutes later, Massachusetts responded with the game-winning goal off a penalty corner. Cliodhna Loughlin received the ball from Izzie Delario at the top of the circle. Loughlin launched a shot far post and Shauna Rankin-Byrne redirected the ball past Emily Leytham.
Leytham and Connie Cape split time in the net, with both keepers turning away two shots.
The Atlantic 10 Championship will be held Nov. 6-7 at Ryan Ellen Field on the campus of Saint Joseph's.
