DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior Anne Federico scored the game-winning goal less than five minutes into the first overtime session as Davidson earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Atlantic 10 rival Richmond on Friday at Belk Turf Field.
The win moves Davidson to 8-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference, putting the Wildcats into first place in the Atlantic 10. Richmond, suffering its first setback in conference play, sits at 6-8 overall and 4-1 in the league.
In the 72nd minute, Davidson earned a penalty corner. Senior Anna Davis fielded the ball and set up Melissa Funsten, who fired a shot towards the cage. Federico redirected the shot past Richmond's Emily Braunewell for the win. It's Federico's second game-winning goal of the year.
Back and fourth action dominated the first half, with neither side fully taking advantage of opportunities. Richmond earned its fair share of penalty corners, but the Wildcats defense and senior backstop Emily Leytham, kept things quiet.
Melissa Funsten nearly gave Davidson a late first-half lead with a shot from the top of circle with less than five minutes to play, but Richmond's Emily Braunewell was there to make the stop. Richmond made a final push as time expired with two shots and a penalty corner, but the two sides entered the break with no score.
Davidson came out strong in the second half earning a series of chances just three minutes into the frame, including two by the way of penalty corners, but the Spiders stood firm on defense. The Wildcats and Spiders each tallied four shots, while Richmond held a narrow 4-3 advantage in penalty corners, but neither side could find the back of the cage.
Davidson will return to action Oct. 24 with a trip to Philadelphia, Pa., to take on Saint Joseph's. The game is set for noon.
