DAVIDSON, N.C. – After thoroughly competing with No. 18 James Madison on Tuesday, the Davidson field hockey team returns to Belk Turf field for an Atlantic 10 clash with the Richmond Spiders.
Where We Stand
Davidson (7-7, 4-1) enters the weekend in second place in the Atlantic 10 behind unbeaten Richmond (7-6, 4-0). Lock Haven and Saint Joseph's are tied for third with a 3-2 mark. Massachusetts (6-7, 2-3), La Salle (5-7, 2-3) and VCU (4-8, 2-3) are currently in a three-way tie for fifth, while Saint Francis (6-5, 1-2) and Saint Louis (0-15, 0-5) rank up in the bottom of the conference.
About Davidson
It has been an enduring stretch for the Wildcats over the last week, having come out on the wrong side of two consecutive nonconference contests. Davidson took on Appalachian State, and most recently No. 18 James Madison, in out-of-conference tilts on the road. The Wildcats currently sit at 7-7 and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10.
Winners of four of their last seven contests, Davidson is scoring an average of 1.43 goals per game over that stretch, while limiting their opponents to just 0.71 goals per game. The senior class has been superb for the Wildcats, accumulating 16 goals and seven assists for 35 points between the trio of Anna Davis, Melissa Funsten and Lucy Pidcock.
Davis leads the team with 16 points on six goals and four assists, while Funsten isn't far between with 14 points on six goals and two helpers. Becca Jones and Paige Albert have also played important roles in the attack, as has Anne Federico, who has found the back of the cage in two of the last four games.
Last Time Out
Senior goalkeeper Emily Leytham made nine saves and three Wildcats fired shots on goal, but a first half score by Danni Wilson gave No. 18 James Madison a 1-0 victory Tuesday night at JMU Field Hockey Complex. Anna Davis, Melissa Funsten and Katherine English registered shots for Davidson.
When It All Comes Together
In Davidson's four conference wins this season, the Wildcats are outscoring opponents 11-3. Including three of Leytham's shutouts, the defense has limited shot and penalty corner chances for the opposition, giving the offense plenty of opportunities to average its 2.20 goals per game in wins.
Score Early and Often
The Wildcats have scored 10 first half goals this season and are 7-0 when scoring the first goal. Davidson has registered 13 second half goals.
Defending the Cage
Senior Emily Leytham has enjoyed an impressive final season for Davidson, posting 67 saves in 14 games. The Charlottesville, Va., native is turning over 79 percent of shots, which is top in the conference and seventh in the country. Her goals against average of 1.28 ranks fourth in the A-10 and 11th in the nation.
A look at Richmond (7-6, 4-0 Atlantic 10)
Richmond, riding a two-game win streak, carries a 7-6 overall mark and an unbeaten record in Atlantic 10 play. Four of Richmond's six losses have come at the hands of top-20 opponents, including a 4-1 loss to then-No. 4 Virginia.
Kelly Quinn sets the tone for the Richmond offense, registering 12 points on six goals this year. Avery Safford is second for the Spiders with nine points (two goals and five assists), while Amy Cooke has registered two goals and two assists for six points.
Goaltenders Emily Braunewell and Amanda Hoty have split time in between the pipes for the Spiders. Braunewell has registered 39 saves in seven games to own a .736 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average. Hoyt, playing 492:30 total minutes this season, has turned away 25 shots in eight games to register a .581 save percentage and a 2.56 goals against average.
