DAVIDSON, N.C. – Carol Grotnes Belk Turf Field, home of the Davidson field hockey team, has been upgraded for the 2014 season, the Wildcats' inaugural in the Atlantic 10. The new state-of-the-art AstroTurf 12 will replace the previous surface, which was in place for the last 12 seasons.
"We are thrilled to finally have the turf completed," said head coach Ginny Turner. "It is a beautiful field and it already plays so smoothly."
AstroTurf 12 is an optimal playing surface for field hockey. The new surface is designed with a premium knitted nylon system that provides uniform traction and consistent footing. The surface helps to improve playability when it is wet, and absorbs water to maintain wet conditions for longer periods of time.
Davidson is just the fifth school in the nine-team conference to upgrade to this playing surface. The Wildcats join Lock Haven, Saint Joseph's, Massachusetts and Richmond.
"It is a great statement of support from the college to give us this wonderful new turf especially as we enter a new conference," said Turner. "We are ready to make an impact in the A-10 and this new facility will help us achieve our goals."
Carol Grotnes Belk Turf Field features grandstands, a press box and lights for night play. The field is named in honor of Carol Grotnes Belk and was donated by her husband, Irwin Belk, class of 1945.
Davidson looks to improve upon its 2013 campaign, which saw the Wildcats finish 6-14 overall. Davidson opens its inaugural A-10 season at Belk Turf Field Saturday, Aug. 30, against Georgetown.
