2014 Davidson Field Hockey Schedule
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite its first season in a new conference, the Davidson field hockey team will face a number of familiar foes as the Wildcats embark on their inaugural Atlantic 10 slate, as announced by head coach Ginny Turner on Thursday.
"We are excited for the challenges of this schedule. We will see tough nonconference opponents right from the start, which I think will prepare us well for the new teams we will face in the A-10," said Turner. "Playing at home the first few weekends will be nice as we gear up for the three flights for A-10 games. We will see a few new teams this fall, which will be exciting and a great change for us. We have a lot of work to do during pre-season to prepare for this schedule, but I think the progressions of teams we play will prepare us well for reaching our goal of the A-10 conference tournament."
For the third time in four years, Davidson will face Georgetown to open the season as the Wildcats and the Hoyas are set to square off in a 2 p.m. contest at Belk Turf Field Aug. 31. Davidson has won the previous three contests without allowing a goal. The following day, the 'Cats will head to Boone, N.C., to face Ball State on the campus of Appalachian State. The squad previously earned a 4-1 win over the Cardinals back in 2012.
Returning home Sept. 6, Davidson will host Rider in a noon contest, looking to improve upon their 1-1 record vs. the Broncs. The Wake Forest Demon Deacons arrive in town for a 1 p.m. match up Sept. 7, just one year removed from a 6-1 victory over the Wildcats. A week later (Sept. 14), Davidson hosts former SoCon foe and in-state rival Appalachian State in a 1 p.m. tilt. The Wildcats and the Mountaineers split last season's two-game series.
Davidson travels to Philadelphia for its first A-10 road swing Sept. 19, when the 'Cats face La Salle at 3 p.m. in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The squad will then head over to New Jersey to square off with Monmouth in West Long Branch. The Wildcats last faced the Hawks in 2008, with Monmouth earning the 3-0 win in Davidson.
The Wildcats will host A-10 opponents St. Joseph's and William & Mary the weekend of September 27 and 28, respectively. The Hawks arrive at Belk Turf Field first for a noon game – the first ever between the two. They will be followed by a familiar foe the next day, as the 'Cats will face the Tribe for the 12th time in program history at 1 p.m.
A trip to Missouri is up next for the 'Cats, who will take on St. Louis in a league contest Oct. 4. Davidson enters the game with a 9-5 series lead over the Billikens, having last faced them in 2011. From there the Wildcats will head over to Springfield, Mo., to take on the Missouri State Bears for the first time in an 11 a.m. (CT) contest.
Returning home for a pair of matchups, the 'Cats welcome James Madison to Belk Turn Field Oct. 8 in a 6 p.m. game. The 2014 season marks the second-straight year the Dukes have traveled to Davidson and they bring a 4-1 series lead with them. A-10 opponent Lockhaven arrives in town Oct. 11, giving the Wildcats the chance to even out their 0-1 mark vs. the Bald Eagles.
Davidson hits the road for the next three games, starting with former NorPac rival Longwood Oct. 13 in Farmville, Va. The two teams have previously battled to a 13-13-1 record, giving either squad the opportunity to take a lead in the series in 2014. The 'Cats will then trek north to Massachusetts, where they are set to face the nationally-ranked Minutewomen at 3 p.m. Oct. 17 in the first-ever meeting between the teams. Davidson will finish the swing at Vermont, facing the Catamounts for the third time Oct. 19 in Burlington.
Over the next two weeks the Wildcats will finish out their home slate, hosting new A-10 foe Saint Francis in Davidson on Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. The 'Cats will look to expand their 4-0 series record against the Red Flash. The final game at Belk Turf Field will be Oct. 31 when VCU comes to town for an A10 matchup at 6 p.m. The 'Cats and the Rams are familiar foes, having faced each other 21 previous times.
Davidson will complete its first Atlantic 10 season Nov. 2 in Richmond where it will face the Spiders at noon. Like VCU, Richmond is also a known opponent for the Wildcats as the Spiders and 'Cats have squared off 15 times prior to Davidson joining the A10.
The top four teams will head to Richmond Nov. 7 for the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
