DAVIDSON, N.C. – As they wrap up the spring season, head coach Ginny Turner and her squad have voted on the annual Davidson field hockey post season accolades, awarding offensive MVP, defensive MVP, rookie of the year and scholar-athlete honors.
Forward Anna Davis and midfielder Melissa Funsten share the offensive MVP honors after leading the Wildcats in goals and points this past season. Funsten netted a team-high seven goals to go along with a pair of assists for a team-high 16 points. Davis was close behind, tallying five goals and a trio of assists for 13 total points on the season. Both earned NorPac East Offensive Player of the Week accolades during the year, while Funsten was also acknowledged with a spot on the NorPac East All-Conference team at the conclusion of the regular season.
Garnering defensive MVP attention was sophomore midfielder Danielle King, who helped the 'Cats rank fourth in the league in goals allowed per game. King also contributed offensively, netting the game-winner for her first career goal to guide Davidson to a crucial 1-0 win over Radford. She ended the season with a pair of goals and six assists, ranking second on the team in that category.
Freshman forward Anne Federico was voted as the team's top rookie. Federico started all 20 games in her first season with the Wildcats, finishing the season with four points on two goals. Her first collegiate goal came in the sudden victory period as the 'Cats took a 4-3 overtime win from Vermont. Her feat earned her NorPac Rookie of the Week honors.
Departing senior Tyler McFayden was named the top scholar-athlete of the season by her peers after concluding an impressive career both on the field and in the classroom. McFayden ranked third on the team in points with 11, while leading the Wildcats in assists with seven on the year. The psychology major, who was recently named a Northwestern Mutual Student-Athlete Spotlight honoree and NFHCA All-Academic Team member, boasts a 3.56 GPA. McFayden, who is minoring in education, interned with the Autism Society of the Carolinas and hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology with a research emphasis on earlier intervention for infants and toddlers with autism.
The Wildcats will conclude their spring slate on Thursday when they host the Charlotte Adult Club squad at Belk Turf Field for a 6:30 p.m. scrimmage.
