DAVIDSON, N.C. – Local product Derham Cato has been named as the offensive line and tight ends coach for Davidson, head football coach Paul Nichols announced Monday.
Cato, a Charlotte Country Day graduate, comes to Davidson after serving three years as a Vanderbilt graduate assistant; a period during which the Commodores saw unprecedented success going to three consecutive bowl games. He worked with the offensive line this past year after working with the defensive line his first two seasons. Cato also handled all film breakdown, scouting reports and scout team responsibilities.
"I am excited to have the opportunity to return home to recruit and develop student athletes to reach their full potential as players and men at one of the nation's top academic institutions," said Cato.
Cato was a four-year letterwinner at Dartmouth College, starting three years at defensive tackle from 2002-04. In 2010, Cato coached tight ends at his alma mater. He also played professionally, with the Toronto Argonauts (Canadian Football League) in 2007, Nashville Kats (Arena Football League) and Frankfurt Galaxy (NFL Europe) in 2006 and Manchester Wolves (Arena Football 2 League) in 2005.
"We are excited to welcome Derham Cato and his family to Davidson College," said Nichols. "He has an outstanding pedigree and is a well-respected football coach. He will do an outstanding job working with our offensive line and tight ends."
Cato earned a bachelor's in international relations from Dartmouth in 2005, and is finalizing work on a masters in education, leadership and organizational leadership from Vanderbilt. He was an all-state and all-county player for Charlotte Country Day.
