SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Davidson junior wide receiver William Morris and senior tight end Trey Huelskamp were voted to the All-Pioneer Football League First Team, while seven Wildcats received honorable mentions, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Fifty-eight student-athletes were named to the 22nd version of the All-PFL squads, while 74 received honorable mentions, including Davidson's Bryant Bednarek (DB), Matt Casey (LB), Jeffrey Keil (RB), Trevor Smith (PK), Nelson White (OL), Chris Woods (DL) and Austin Wells (RS). All selections were made by the league's coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes.
With nine total honorees, it's the most for Davidson since 2010 and a three-fold improvement from last season, while the seven honorable mentions are a program record. The group consists of four seniors, two juniors and three freshmen. Only six other freshmen received honorable mentions, while no true underclassmen made the All-PFL team.
Morris, an honorable mention last season, and Huelskamp are both first-time selections.
Morris (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) was not only the top receiver in the PFL, but one of the best in the nation. He finished the season with a school-record 1,224 yards receiving and 98 receptions, the second most in a season at Davidson, to lead the PFL and rank in the Top 10 in the FCS in both categories. His seven receiving touchdowns were seventh best in the league and 34th in the FCS. Morris had five games with double-digit catches, and was one of just two players with three 12-plus catch games this season. He also totaled more than 100 yards receiving five times. His top performances, which were recognized with College Football Performance Awards FCS Wide Receiver Performer of the Week honorable mentions, were a 16-catch, 208-yard, one-touchdown game at VMI (Sept. 13) and a 15-catch, 158-yard, three-touchdown effort in a quintuple-overtime loss to Dayton (Oct. 4).
Morris will enter next season needing 344 yards receiving to match the school's all-time receiving yards record.
Huelskamp (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) made a career-high 48 catches for 471 yards to lead fellow PFL tight ends by a large margin, and he ranked second on the team to Morris in both categories overall. He also hauled in the first two touchdown receptions of his career. In a loss at Princeton, Huelskamp led the Wildcats in receiving, setting career highs with nine catches for 82 yards, earning a CFPA FCS Tight End Performer of the Week honorable mention. He concluded his career with 108 receptions for 988 yards.
Two of Davidson's seven honorable mentions were also offensive players: Jeffrey Keil (Tampa, Fla./Wharton), who was named the league's offensive freshman of the year Monday, and senior offensive lineman Nelson White (Concord, N.C./Jay M. Robinson).
Keil rushed for a Davidson freshman all-time best 725 yards and also rushed for eight touchdowns, resulting in the best single-season rushing effort by a Wildcat overall since Jonathon Hubbard's 769-yard, 13-touchdown campaign in 2006. At the regular season's end, Keil ranked fifth among FCS freshmen with 60.4 yards per game. His top effort was a 33-carry, 215-yard, two-touchdown performance against Stetson, Oct. 25, making him one of five FCS freshmen to rush for more than 200 yards in a single game this season, and just the sixth Wildcat to ever accomplish the feat. He was also one of 16 running backs named to the College Football Performance Award's FCS National Freshman Performer of the Year Watch List.
White did not see the field as a freshman, but he started all 34 games after his first season. He played a major part in creating holes for an improved rushing attack that averaged 142.2 yards per game, the most by a Davidson team since 2009 and the second most since 1999.
On the other side of the ball, senior honor committee members Bryant Bednarek (Westerville, Ohio/New Albany) and Matt Casey (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) were joined by junior honor committee rep Chris Woods (Burlington, N.C./Cummings).
Bednarek led the team with 7.5 tackles for loss amongst his 56 total tackles, which ranked third on the team. He also tied for the team lead with two interceptions and made two sacks. Bednarek tallied a season-best 10 tackles (8 solo) against Dayton (Oct. 4). A starter since his freshman season, he finished his stellar career with 226 tackles (133 solo).
Casey put together another remarkable season, making a career-high 110 tackles – the third most in Davidson history – including a career-high 17 in his final game. Casey also shined against Catawba (14 tackles) and Morehead State (15 tackles, one interception), and totaled four tackles behind the line, two sacks and two interceptions. A second-team All-PFL selection last season, the middle linebacker ultimately totaled 269 tackles for his career - the eighth most in Davidson history.
Woods had to battle through injuries in addition to opposing linemen this season, but he finished in a tie for third on the team with 5.5 tackles for loss, and third with 2.5 sacks. His top game came at Marist (Nov. 15), where he posted 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss.
Rounding out Davidson's honorees were a pair of freshmen special teamers: kicker Trevor Smith (Tampa, Fla./Cambridge Christian) and kick returner Austin Wells (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood).
Smith filled a tremendous need as place kicker. After a shaky start, he concluded the season by converting 6-of-7 field goal attempts to finish at 9-of-13. His biggest kick of the year came at the end of regulation against Dayton when he connected on a 44-yard field goal to force overtime. Smith was nearly perfect on extra points, but he missed his final attempt of the season.
Wells averaged 20.0 yards per kick return to rank sixth in the PFL. His top performance came at Drake, where he returned seven kicks for a total of 168 yards with a long run of 60.
Drake redshirt senior defensive lineman Matt Acree was the lone unanimous (i.e., received all 10 possible first-team votes) selection to the All-PFL teams. In addition, three student-athletes earned their second first-team All-PFL honor – Jacksonville senior wide receiver Andrew Robistelli and Stetson sophomore defensive back Donald Payne repeated their 2013 honors, while Marist redshirt senior linebacker Paul Sakowski was a 2012 first-team honoree.
Ten of the 11 league members had at least one student-athlete named first-team All-PFL, with league-champion San Diego leading the way with six first-team honorees. The Toreros also led the league with 11 student-athletes named to both the league's first and second teams.
The Academic All-PFL team, highlighted by the league's first Scholar-Athlete of the Year, will be released Wednesday, concluding the league's awards week.
