DAVIDSON, N.C. – Melissa Funsten notched a hat trick but it was freshman Anne Federico who scored the game winner in overtime as the Davidson field hockey team defeated Vermont 4-3 at Belk Turf Field Friday evening to move to 3-0 on the season.
Federico made sure her first collegiate strike was a memorable one, redirecting a shot from fellow rookie Becca Jones off a penalty corner with four and a half minutes to go in the first overtime period. The Wildcats had taken a two-goal advantage due to Funsten's hat trick, but the Catamounts rallied in the end of the second half to tie things up 3-3 and force the overtime.
The Wildcats continued their strong offensive attack, out-shooting the Catamounts 25-9 and leading the overtime with seven shots to none. Funsten had a team-high nine shots, with Anna Davis adding in seven. The 'Cats also out-cornered UVM 11-0 in the contest.
Carolyn Macek came up with three stops in the contest, while her UVM counterpart Stephanie Zygmunt had 10 saves. Colleen Slaughter had a pair of shots and goal to lead the Catamounts (0-3).
Funsten started the scoring just over 23 minutes into the game by converting on a penalty stroke to put the Wildcats in front 1-0.
The Catamounts struck back three minutes later when Ashley McDonald redirected a trickling shot by Slaughter past Davidson's Macek to knot the score at 1-1, which it would remain through the half.
Just two minutes into the second half, Funsten notched her second goal of the game. She dribbled the ball into the circle and beat the UVM keeper from five years out to put the Wildcats in front 2-0. Funsten then capped the hat trick seven minutes later. After the Wildcats were awarded a penalty corner, Tyler McFayden inserted the ball to Danielle King for the stop before Funsten knocked it in from the top of the circle as the 'Cats found themselves with a 3-0 advantage.
Two in a row from the Catamounts would knot the game a three-all. Slaughter struck off a pass from Aria Robinson 56:32 into regulation, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Anne-Marie Farmer then tied things up for the Catamounts, picking up a ball played off the Davidson keeper in the midst of a scramble in sending it in with just over six minutes to play and forcing the overtime period.
The Wildcats struck first in the extra minutes, putting up the first six shots. Davidson was awarded three straight penalty corners in the first 10 minutes of action, with Madeline Herder inserting to Anna Davis for the stop on the final corner. Funsten faked the shot before Jones took the true attempt. Her shot was redirected in front by Federico, who beat the Catamount keeper to notch her first career goal – a game winner- and end the sudden-victory period.
Davidson heads to Winston-Salem, N.C., on Tuesday to take on No. 18 Wake Forest in a 6:30 p.m. tilt.
