DAF Launches Student Athlete Volunteer Program
9/18/2013 9:18:00 PM | DAF
Student athletes are the driving force behind the Davidson Athletic Fund's goal to raise dollars for its Division I teams through annual support, scholarships and capital improvements. In the past, student athletes and their supporters have had few occasions to interact. Beginning this year, the DAF has created a formal program designed to facilitate a more meaningful connection between athletic supporters and students.
The DAF student volunteer program offers student athletes an easy and fun way to gain valuable work experience, while interacting and networking with Davidson alumni, parents and friends. This exciting opportunity allows student volunteers to serve as the face of Davidson athletics outside of their sport and create a positive experience for donors to the Davidson Athletic Fund.
"The idea for this program came about when volleyball senior Taylor Pisel expressed interest in working with our office', DAF Associate Director Suzette McQueen explained. "Over the summer, with help from teammate Layne Doctson, we crafted the initial plans. They were both instrumental in helping to spread the word about the program to other student athletes and because of their efforts we attracted over 40 applicants."
The program is divided into three areas: events, donor stewardship and communications and social media. The goal is to tailor the activities to the strengths of each student athlete, as well as to provide opportunities to hone other skills. Volunteers can sign up for various tasks based on their athletic season and practice schedules.
The first test of the program came during the Davidson Gridiron Club tailgate before the season home opener versus Lenoir-Rhyne. Seven student athletes volunteered their time to help with set-up, registration and welcoming alumni, parents and friends.
Just one month from the program's first meeting, the DAF has started to receive requests for student volunteers to serve as ambassadors at other sporting events, to serve on task forces and to speak as part of panel discussions.
