WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After limiting the opposing offense in the first half, the Davidson field hockey team couldn't hold off a three-goal outburst in the second half by No. 18 Wake Forest and dropped a 5-1 contest to the Demon Deacons Tuesday evening at Kentner Stadium. The loss is the Wildcats' first of the season, putting them at 3-1 thus far.
Katherine English led the Wildcats with three shots, scoring her second goal of the season on one of her attempts. Melissa Funsten put up two shots on goal and recorded an assist. At the other end of the field, Carolyn Macek came up with four saves.
Anna Kozniuk notched a pair of goals for the Demon Deacons, but it was Taylor Rhea who led with five shots. Wake Forest out-shot the Wildcats 18-6 and out-cornered them 6-3. Valerie Dahmen made three saves in net for WFU.
The Demon Deacons got on the board early, as Jess Newak grabbed a rebound and found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead just under three minutes into the game.
English scored her second of the season 15 minutes into the first half to tie the game 1-1. Tyler McFayden inserted the ball on a penalty corner to Danielle King, who sent it over to English. English then took a hard shot from the top of the circle, deflecting it off a Wake Forest defender and into the net for the score.
Wake's Rhea then took a feed from Kozniuk, knocking it in from in front of the net to put the Demon Deacons back in front 2-1 with just over 11 to play in the first half.
Kozniuk notched a goal of her own to start the scoring in the second half, taking a feed from Rhea off a corner to keep Wake Forest in front 4-1 five minutes into the second half. Minutes later, Kozniuk added her second of the game off a Wake corner to put the Demon Deacons in front 4-1.
In the midst of the second half, Sydney Schreiner came up with a big defensive save. With Macek drawn out of the net, Schreiner stepped it to save and clear a hard Wake Forest shot by Abbey Thornhill.
Heather Wiley made it 5-1 in favor of WFU soon after. Wiley picked up a loose ball Macek came out to play and sent it into the net for the score.
Davidson will head to Virginia on Saturday for a noon tilt with the University of Richmond.
