COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A five-goal second half, along with a solid performance in net by Carolyn Macek, led the Davidson field hockey team to a 6-0 win over the Georgetown Hoyas in the season opener Friday afternoon. It was the third consecutive season the Wildcats have shutout the Hoyas.
Senior Tyler McFayden led the way with a pair of goals off a team-leading seven shots, while sophomore Melissa Funsten and junior Sara French netted one apiece. Freshmen Becca Jones and Katherine English both scored in their collegiate debuts. Funsten and fellow sophomore Danielle King each tallied an assist in the contest.
"We are very excited to open the season with a strong win," said head coach Ginny Turner. "We played great team hockey today and it was excellent to see so many different players score. We did a tremendous job of setting each other up to look good and create opportunities all over the field."
The Wildcats outshot the Hoyas 21-7, with Macek making two big stops in net. The 'Cats also out-cornered Georgetown 7-4. Allyah Graves led the Hoyas with three shots, while Rosalie Nolen and Rachel Skonecki combined for six saves.
McFayden scored off a reverse stick shot just over 22 minutes into the contest, knocking in an unassisted goal to put Davidson in front 1-0. Neither team would score the rest of the half.
Funsten took a feed from King off of a corner, sending it past the Georgetown keeper to make it a 2-0 game 10 minutes into the second half. Two minutes later Funsten sent a pass over to English, who found the back of the net for her first career tally as the Wildcats found themselves up 3-0.
McFayden picked up her second score of the game 57:37 into action, sending a shot in from the top that ricocheted off the Hoyas' netminder and into the goal for a 4-0 Davidson lead. Soon after French was awarded a penalty stroke, which she successfully converted to make it 5-0. Jones would wrap up the scoring with her first career goal with just over a minute to play as the 'Cats took the contest 6-0.
The Wildcats will remain in College Park to take on Towson Sunday morning in a 10 a.m. match up.
