DAVIDSON, N.C. – A pair of games against nationally-ranked ACC opponents, as well as two more vs. future Atlantic 10 rivals and a challenging NorPac line up a highlight the 2013 Davidson field hockey slate as announced by head coach Ginny Turner on Monday.
"This is a challenging schedule that puts us on the road many weekends throughout the season, but I believe that this team is up to the test," said Turner. "Our NorPac opponents are always competative games and we have a few A-10 teams that will get us ready for the transition in 2014. We face some of the top teams in the country and with a great group of returning players, plus our excellent incoming class, I am excited for all that we can accomplish this year."
For the second consecutive season, the Wildcats will open the year with a contest vs. the Big East's Georgetown (Aug. 30). This time, the two squads will face off in College Park, Md., where the 'Cats will take on Towson Sept. 1.
Returning home to Belk Turf Field, Davidson will play host to Vermont for the second all-time meeting between the 'Cats and the Catamounts Sept. 6. Next up for the Wildcats is a nine-game road swing that kicks off in Winston-Salem with a Sept. 10 contest vs. perennial contender Wake Forest. The ACC's Demon Deacons were ranked 16th in the nation at the time of last season's meeting.
Fans will get a glimpse into the future Sept. 14 when the Wildcats head to Virginia to face the University of Richmond in what will be the final nonconference match up between the two programs. Starting in 2014-15, the 'Cats and the Spiders will meet as part of the Atlantic 10's league schedule. Three days later, Davidson opens its final NorPac season with a game in Boone, N.C., against in-state rival Appalachian State (Sept. 17).
Davidson will travel to Virginia for its next six contests, starting in Williamsburg with a nonconference tilt with William & Mary. The 'Cats will face Coach Turner's alma mater Sept. 22 before moving on to Richmond for a pair of games. They will meet Siena in a neutral site match up Sept. 28 before meeting future A-10 foe VCU Sept. 29. The squad will wrap things up in Virginia with NorPac games at Liberty (Oct. 5) and Longwood (Oct. 6).
The Wildcats will return to Belk Turf Field to host five of their next six contests, starting with a re-match with Appalachian State Oct. 11. They will welcome James Madison Oct. 18 before hitting the road for Chapel Hill to face the highly touted UNC Tar Heels Oct. 20. Liberty comes to town Oct. 25, with Radford following Oct. 27. The 'Cats will then wrap up the season on their home field vs. Liberty for the second consecutive season Nov. 3.
Davidson will then head to the 2013 NorPac Tournament Nov. 6-9 at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
