STATESBORO, Ga. – Senior Demetrios Pagonis won the men's 10,000-meter run championship on the first day of competition at the 2013 SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championships to lead Davidson Saturday at the Eagle Track & Field Complex at Erk Russell Athletic Park. As a team, the Wildcats rank fourth in the nine-team event.
Pagonis broke the facility record in the 10,000m with a time of 31 minutes, 15.65 seconds. He was joined on the podium by rookie teammate Daniel Samet, who took third in 31:25.98, and senior Wes Reynolds also finished in the scoring group in sixth in 31:34.53.
Pagonis becomes the third Wildcat to ever win the 10K title, and the first since Lance Harden in 2009. It's his first outdoor title and his second overall (2012 indoor 5000-meter run). Samet's time earned him a place on the school's all-time top-10 performers list in the event, while Reynold's time was a personal best and improved his ranking on the same list.
In the field events, the Wildcats earned two more sixth-place finishes. Junior Stewart Dalton took sixth in the long jump with a top leap of 22 feet, ¾ inch (6.72m), while classmate Michael Lorentsen did the same in the pole vault, clearing a personal best and Davidson all-time top-10 best 14 feet, 3 ¼ inches (4.35m).
Senior Vincent Weir also scored points for the Wildcats with a seventh-place finish in the steeplechase in a Davidson all-time top-10 time of 9:23.20.
In the preliminaries, junior Andrew Lantz advanced to the finals of the 800-meter run with the second-fastest time of the day of 1:51.49, and will look to defend his title in the event Sunday. His time gives him four of the top five fastest times in Davidson history in the event.
Freshman Charles Rappe advanced to the 400-meter hurdles finals by securing the final qualifying slot and a place on Davidson's all-time top-10 performers list in 54.90 seconds.
Nate Faubion led Davidson in the 400-meter dash 51.98 seconds, but did not finish in the top eight.
