Davidson's Tennis Teams Gear Up for SoCon Tournament, Play Begins Thursday

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's and women's tennis teams head to Elon, N.C., where they will take part in the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament, Apr. 18-21.
The Wildcat men (11-8, 5-5 SoCon), seeded seventh, will be seeking the program's 10th tournament title, and first since 1973, while the Wildcat women (9-11, 2-8 SoCon) are looking for their first title. The women are seeded ninth this year for the tournament.
The men will matchup in the first round against tenth-seeded Wofford (3-14, 1-9 Socon) on Thursday, Apr. 18 at 1 p.m. The Terriers closed out the regular season losing their final six matches, including a 4-3 defeat to Davidson at home.
Should the 'Cats advance, second-seeded Samford (12-9, 7-3 SoCon) awaits them in the next round on Friday, Apr. 19, with match time set for 1:00 p.m. The Bulldogs won seven of their last 10 matches, which included taking a 7-0 road win at Davidson. Samford was ranked 74th at the time of the match.
The women will open tournament play vs. eighth-seeded Samford (8-14, 3-7 SoCon) on Thursday, with match time set for 9 a.m. The Bulldogs lost their final four matches and 10 of the past 12 overall.
If the women advance, they would take on top-seeded College of Charleston (17-8, 9-1 SoCon) Friday at 9:00 a.m. The Cougars lone defeat in SoCon play was at Elon, 5-2, but they won their last six straight matches after that defeat. They were ranked as high as No. 61 during the season.

The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The all-time series vs. Wofford is 13-8 in favor of the Wildcats since 1988. Connor Evins sealed the win with a two-set victory at No. 5 singles. Earlier in the match he had teamed with Nicky Kunz to help the 'Cats to earn the doubles point.
For the women, they are 1-4 vs. the Samford Bulldogs as the series just dates back to 2009 when Samford joined the SoCon. Davidson fell 5-2 in this year's regular season meeting, March 29. Stephani Synn earned her 21st career win, while Nisha Crouser gave Davidson its second point in the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 4.
SoCon Tournament History
Davidson men are 11-13 since 1988 in the tournament. Last year saw the Wildcats fall in their first-round match vs. Chattanooga, 4-3.
The Wildcat women are 17-14 in the tournament since 1993, the first year Davidson was a part of the SoCon. In three of the past eight league tournaments, they have reached the finals, facing Furman each time.
Last year their season ended in the first round when they dropped a 4-1 match to Georgia Southern.
Scouting the Wildcat Men- Quick Hits
• Davidson enters the tournament winning three of its last five regular season matches, but its one defeat was to Samford.
• Davidson's 11-8 record is its best record since going 14-8 in 2008.
• The 'Cats went a combined 49-55 in singles play this year and they were an even 24-36 in league matches.
•Joe Schafer leads the way with a 10-8 singles mark, 5-5 in league matches. He went 9-5 at the No. 2 position.
• Schafer had a team-best five-match win streak during the season.
• Schafer and Chris Mark (7-9) each won five SoCon matches, while Connor Evins had a team-high 6-4 record to go with his 9-7 singles record.
• Schafer, Mark and Kevin Moore were each honored by the league this year. Schafer was the Don Bunch/Buddy Hartsell Sportsmanship Award winner, while the doubles team of Mark and Moore were named to the All-SoCon Second Team at No. 1 doubles.
• Nicky Kunz, a 2012 All-SoCon Freshman Team member, went 8-10 in his second year.
• Mark and Moore were the Wildcats top doubles team, going 9-9 overall at the No. 1 spot.
• Schafer and Ethan Kallick, the No. 2 doubles team, recorded a 7-6 record, while Kunz and Robert Lightbourn had a 7-4 record, going 6-4 at No. 3.
• Davidson went an even 27-23 in doubles action and an even 15-15 in SoCon play.
• The Wildcats had an 8-4 record at home and 3-4 on the road.
• Head coach Drew Barrett is in his seventh season and collected 64 wins at Davidson. He has 103 for his career.
Scouting the Wildcat Women- Quick Hits
• Davidson closed out the regular season 2-3 in its last five matches, with the wins coming against Western Carolina (7-0) and Wofford (4-3).
• The 'Cats earned 50 wins in singles action, with 14 of those coming against SoCon foes.
• Nisha Crouser led the way with a 12-7 singles mark, going 5-5 vs. the SoCon.
• The junior went 8-5 at No. 4 singles, with her .615 winning percentage ranking sixth.
• Crosuer had a team-best seven-match win streak and finished the regular season winning three of her last five matches.
• Brites Moniz-Soares3 and Elaina Cummer# were next with 6-10 and 7-13 singles record, respectively.
• Cummer was named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team, the first time a Wildcat was named to the team.
• Synn went 5-8 in singles play and 4-4 in SoCon play. She had a strong end to the regular season, winning four of her last six matches including rattling off a three-match win streak.
• Davidson went 28-29 in doubles play during the regular season, picking up nine of those wins vs. the SoCon.
• Crouser and Synn tallied a 9-7 record at No. 2 doubles to pace the team.
• Cummer and Moniz-Soares were next at 8-9 at the top spots.
• The Wildcats used eight different doubles combinations this year.
• Head coach Caroline Price is in her 31st year, while collecting 415 career wins at Davidson. She is a three-time SoCon Coach of the Year, with the last one coming in 2002.
• The 'Cats nine wins are the most since the 2010 when they went 15-8.
